From the moment you arrive in Kilkenny, it’s like stepping back into medieval times, an experience that’s just under an hour away from Dublin, making it an ideal day trip. This part of my journey was when the “living like a local” feeling hit me the hardest.
While tourists roam the streets, there’s an authentic small-town vibe here, pulsating with the energy of townspeople who genuinely love where they live. Some of my favorite parts of Kilkenny include:
Smithwick’s Experience
The Smithwick’s Experience (pronounced “smid-icks”) was an absolute blast. This interactive tour gave us the chance to mill the malt, stir the mash, and savor the scent of the hops, immersing us in the brewing process.
Kilkenny Castle
Kilkenny Castle is hard to miss, and when you see it, prepare to be awestruck. Nestled in the heart of the city, this attraction dates back to the twelfth century and served as the primary residence for the butlers, earls, marquesses, and dukes of Ormond for nearly six centuries. Although I didn’t explore the castle’s interior, I enjoyed strolling around its exterior, taking in the breathtaking sights of the well-maintained gardens and vibrant flowers.
Malzards Bar and Pub
Malzards Bar and Pub turned out to be a highlight of my tour, potentially my favorite activity. This family-run traditional Irish pub was a hidden gem, providing our group with hours of pure enjoyment. We got a great lesson on Gaelic hurling, engaged in some hilarious game play out back, and soaked up the family atmosphere as a live musician belted out hit after hit.
Matt the Millers
I had a great time on my last night in Kilkenny at Matt the Millers, where the loud crowd and fantastic live music created an awesome atmosphere. What can I say? I’m a sucker for live music and talented musicians.
